Alfred Surenyan

(Born Dec.12, 1968)

Alfred Surenyan was born on December 12th, 1968, in Istanbul, Turkey. When he was 5 years old his parents immigrated to the United States.

In order to understand Mr. Surenyan's love for music, one has to understand his upbringing. His mother, a very talented artist/painter, raised little Alfred in a house full of music and art. The record player was constantly playing classical music, and mom's artworks filled the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, every nook and cranny of the house. Mr. Surenyan’s father was a part-time musician in his spare time, and his sister a dedicated writer.

After high school, Mr. Surenyan attended Los Angeles Valley College, where he studied music - piano, composition, orchestration and arranging. There, he earned an AA in Music in 1992. His studies were only to blossom from then on. Mr. Surenyan continued to further his knowledge of music and all its aspects by attending California State University Northridge; he received his Bachelor of Music in Composition in 1997, and his Masters of Music in Composition in 1999. Although his focus was composition, Alfred did not stop there. He excelled in piano studies, orchestration, arranging, film scoring techniques and pedagogy; for what is a musician is he cannot pass his knowledge and love of music to others? As a student, Mr. Surenyan was co-director of a school-based composers' group - New Directions Composers' Group. He was also required to give 2 concerts, each 45 minutes in duration. He not only composed the musical material to be performed on those concerts, but he acquired the players, organized rehearsals, and conducted most of his compositions himself. Yes, you guessed it - Mr. Surenyan is also a talented conductor.

In 2003, Mr. Surenyan continued his education by enrolling at Claremont Graduate University. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition. During his course of studies, Mr. Surenyan studied composition with Peter Boyer. He also has developed his skills in studio recording with protools, finale and Digital Performer. His compositional studies has turned to parody techniques (creating new music from pre-existed music) and folk music studies. His DMA paper research materials are the studies of Bela Bartok and Komitas. During the past year, he studied musicology with Dr. Robert Zappulla with courses in the music of J.S. Bach.

Currently, Mr. Surenyan has completed his course work at Claremont and is working towards his qualifying exams, DMA paper, and composition. Musically he has developed the folk music in his melodic writing, and his own harmonic language. His music is tonal/ modal centered with medieval and early music orientations. Some of his future planned compositions are pagan related with emphasis on Wiccan and Italian Witchcraft mythology. A sketch of an oratorio is being developed on the legendary Italian Witch Messiah, known as Aradia: the Holy Strega.
